Shri Banwarilal Purohit, presently Assam Governor, is Chairman of Shri Ramdeobaba College of Engineering and Management (RCOEM), Nagpur- one of the premier engineering and management colleges in the Country and is a senior political personality having shaped public affairs in a big way since last four decades. Born on April 16, 1940, Shri Purohit, popularly called "Babuji" by his countless admirers, did hid schooling from Bishop Cotton School, Nagpur and from Rajasthan. He obtained his commerce degree from Nagpur University.
Shri Purohit is three-time Lok Sabha member from Nagpur and a former minister of State in Maharashtra, an eminent educationist, a renowned social activist, institution builder, ace orator, nationalist thinker and Managing Editor of 'The Hitavada', Central India's oldest and largest circulated English daily since last one hundred years.
Shri Purohit, a well-known public figure with spotless image, has been in active public life for more than four decades making his mark in the social, political, educational and industrial fields of Central India. Preferring Spartan and simple lifestyle, Shri Purohit always remained a leader loved by masses.
He was instrumental in bringing major Central Government institutions like South Central Zone Cultural Centre (SCZCC), Central Institute of Cotton Research (CICR), National Research Centre for Citrus (NRCC), Raman Science Centre, Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminum Research and Development Centre (JNARDC) and several other projects to Nagpur.
Shri Purohit has been associated with many social, charitable, religious and sports organizations and has generously donated for the cause of education and social work. He is Vice-Chairman, National Trustee and Executive Member of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, one of the premier societies running more than 400 educational institutions across the globe and publisher of some of the most popular books on Indian History, Indian Culture and its civilisational heritage and so far has published 2050 titles and sold 33 million copies. He is also Chairman of the Nagpur Kendra of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan which runs seven schools and enjoys highest reputation.
He is also associated with the premier educational institution - The Women's Education Society, which runs Lady Amritabai Daga College for Women of Arts, Commerce & Science and Smt. Ratnidevi Purohit College of Home Science and Home Science Technology.
